A handful of Members of Congress have broken from party leaders and are loudly criticizing Israel for the attack on a flotilla of aid ships headed for Gaza that left nine dead, including one American.
Several Democratic and Republican party leaders and numerous rank-and-file Members have strongly defended Israel this week following the attack, which has led to international condemnations and fury from Turkey, a key U.S. ally.
But several Members have sharply criticized Israel’s blockade of Gaza and the attack on the flotilla to enforce it.
Libertarian Rep. Ron Paul was the latest to rip the attacks, speaking Thursday on “Imus in the Morning” on Fox Business Network. The Texas Republican likened the situation in Gaza to “concentration camps” and argued that the United States, as a financial supporter of Israel, is morally responsible for the Middle Eastern nation’s actions.
Paul said he thinks “it’s absolutely wrong” for the United States to endorse keeping humanitarian shipments out of Gaza when people “are starving and having problems that are almost like in concentration camps.”
“I think it’s just terrible, and I don’t think we should be part of it,” he added.
Paul said America should separate itself from Israel’s blockade. He said he advocated the stance: “Israel, if you want to do this, you’re on your own. We’re not backing you up.”
Likewise, liberal Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) is circulating a letter to President Barack Obama calling for Israel to pay a financial price for the raid. “Israel owes the United States more than reckless, pre-meditated violence waged against innocent people,” the letter states.
Rep. Keith Ellison, who is Muslim, blamed Israel’s blockade of Gaza for the confrontation and said it was counterproductive. “The blockade punishes ordinary citizens and strengthens Hamas’ control over commerce,” the Minnesota Democrat said Tuesday. “I am concerned for Israel’s security, and an undernourished and unemployed Gazan population does not promote this goal.”
Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) also condemned the attack Tuesday. “While the U.S. supports Israel’s security, it is impossible to comprehend or make excuses for Israel’s decision to confront and kill civilian activists,” she said. “This unnecessary and preventable incident demands a comprehensive investigation by the international community fully supported by the United States.”
Others Express Support for Israel
Most Congressional reaction, by contrast, has been staunchly in Israel’s defense, with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer issuing a point-by-point defense of Israel on Wednesday.
The Maryland Democrat blamed activists on board the ships for provoking the violence and said Israel was acting within its right to self-defense. He also noted that Israel had offered to allow the aid to flow through the Israeli port of Ashdod to Gaza once it was checked for weapons, and he blamed Hamas for the blockade.
“Hamas could end the blockade at any time by recognizing Israel’s right to exist, renouncing violence and releasing Gilad Shalit,” he said, referring to a captured Israeli soldier.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been relatively neutral in her remarks, calling for an investigation into the incident, although the California Democrat declined to criticize the blockade in a conference call Wednesday with bloggers.
House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.), the only Jewish Republican in Congress, has called for Obama to veto any United Nations resolutions “reining in Israel’s right to defend itself.”
And he defended the blockade. “We can’t forget why the blockade exists in the first place: to deny Hamas the weaponry and raw materials it needs to continue its rocket attacks in Israel, killing innocent people,” Cantor said.
Ohip Rep. Dennis Kucinich is breaking ranks with Democratic leaders, issuing a harsh condemnation of Israel’s deadly raid of a Turkish flotilla carrying humanitarian supplies and activists to Gaza.
The Monday attack killed at least 10 civilians, who had been part of a group of pro-Palestinian activists. The White House has said it “regrets” the loss of life but has not directly criticized Israel, and many Democrats, including Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, have backed Israel’s right to defend itself against attempts to run the Gaza blockade.
The raid “constitutes an act of belligerence against Turkey,” a key military ally that has helped the U.S. withdraw troops in Iraq by offering use of its air bases, Kucinich writes in his letter, which he plans to send to the White House.
“In its violent commando raid on the Mavi Marmara, the government of Israel showed no concern as to how its conduct may affect the lives of defenseless, innocent people, its friends and allies and, in particular, the United States,” the letter states.
Hoyer, by contrast, was very sympathetic to Israel.
“Israel — rightfully so — invoked its right to self-defense on the Mavi Marmara,” Hoyer said. “While the majority of ships in the flotilla — 5 out of 6 — reacted peacefully when approached by Israeli Defense Forces, activists on board the Mavi Marmara were clearly bent on a violent confrontation.”
Kucinich is also calling for diplomatic and economic sanctions against Israel and wants the U.S. to tell Israel that it’s unacceptable to shoot and kill innocent civilians, commit an act of aggression against another U.S. ally or block ships with humanitarian relief.

This is an immediate grounds for a mistrial…
I know what that all of the military fellas will say that this is how military trials operate, but this issue is a national security issue and that is the difference. There is overwhelming evidence that Obama is not who he says he is and that Lt Col Lakin’s allegations have merit, due to the constitutional crisis that this nation faces from a president with FOREIGN ties.
The Joint Chief’s and the cowards beneath them have committed treason and violated their oaths in my opinion, because this could have been avoided before the 2008 election.
Military trial or NOT, this is still America and Lt Col Lakin is being denied a fair trial and the American people need to demand that the Hawaiian officials be forced to testify UNDER OATH. This charade has gone on long enough.
Barry’s daddy was NOT an American citizen; therefore Obama is not a natural born citizen, because BOTH parents need to be US Citizens.

The above information was reprinted from an email I received last night.. please share this information with everyone you know. It is very important that we spread the truth about the Military trying to cover-up for Obama by using the JAG to rule against Discovery with regard to Obama’s eligibility. This type of behavior from the Military is unacceptable. If the Military can hang a dedicated Officer like LTC Lakin out to dry to protect Obama just think who is next.
Military Officers (unlike enlisted men) swear their Oath to the Constitution of the United States, not to another man such as Obama.

NEW YORK – The Obama administration is pressing Israel to allow into the Gaza Strip newactivist flotillas setting sail from Europe, according to an official in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office speaking to WND.
Separately, an Israeli government official said the White House asked Netanyahu for concessions in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in exchange for U.S. opposition to the establishment of a United Nations commission to investigate Israel's commando raid of a flotilla earlier this week that resulted in the deaths of nine violent activists.
Previous U.N. commissions investigating the Jewish state were seen as biased against Israel, including a probe earlier this year that claimed Israel carried out war crimes during its defensive war in Gaza in 2009 targeting the Hamas terror group.
The Israeli government official also told WND that Netanyahu canceled a scheduled meeting with Obama earlier this week after the White House sent signals to Israel that the timing was not good for a meeting in light of the flotilla incident.

Ayers, Dorhn helped organize 'peace' flotilla

It's not like these people don't have enough blood on their hands already:
Former Weather Underground leaders William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, as well as Code Pink founder Jodie Evans, helped organize the Free Gaza Movement, which launched the six-ship flotilla from Turkey to Israel that ended in a violent clash with Israeli Defense Forces, BigGovernment.com reported.
In January, the trio were spotted in Egypt attempting to stir up crowds on the streets with 1,400 other left-wing activists after the Egyptian government refused to allow Free Gaza Movement members to enter the Gaza Strip. About 100 marchers were eventually allowed to cross the border, where they were met by former Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh.
BigGovernment quotes author Philip Weiss, who wrote that he witnessed Ayers and Dohrn arguing with fellow activists over whether to accept Egypt's offer to allow a small number of them into Gaza:
"Dohrn said that the principle of ‘All or none' was a miserable one for activist politics. You always took what you could get and kept fighting for more. A European man in a red keffiyeh screamed at her that she was serving the fascisti. Her partner Bill Ayers gently confronted him and asked him why he was so out of control. Between getting on and off the bus, Dohrn, who wore a flower in her hair, said that she didn't like the absolutist certainty of the people on the other side of the police barricades, and having been in the Weather Underground, she knew something about absolutist feeling."
As political theater, an argument between the aging flower child/domestic terrorist and a fellow traveler over who knew more about "absolutist feelings" would be hard to top.
We should have known. The techniques used by violent radicals in the 1960's are perfectly suited to this kind of war that Hamas is fighting against Israel. No doubt Ayers and Dorhn were able to school their less experienced colleagues in the art of violent propaganda.
I wonder what Obama would say if some intrepid reporter would ask about the doings of his friend?

Democrat party front group Media Matters for America has released several statements in recent days seeking to throw reporters off the trail of the strong ties between President Barack Obama and Jodie Evans, co-founder of the terrorist support group Code Pink.
Media Matters attempts to influence public opinion by getting their politically-slanted, factually-challenged reports in the hands of sympathetic liberal reporters who then either regurgitate Media Matters’ propaganda to the public as news or use it as guidance to bury news.
In this case, Media Matters was responding to a report by World Net Daily’s Aaron Klein, picked up by Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit and Big Government, and by Glenn Beck, tying Obama to leaders of the so-called Gaza Freedom Movement, the group behind the terror flotilla intercepted by Israel as the six ship convoy attempted to break a blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt on the terrorist enclave of Gaza.
